Thanksgiving

Thanks everybody, for everything.

(There, that pretty much covers it)

Moleskine

And speaking of classic technology, I got a new (and my first) Moleskine today. Apparently it is pronounced mol-a-skeen’-a, so I think I’ll just refer to it as My Notebook from now on.

I bought it instead of a PDA. It’s lighter, pocketable, more durable, faster to write in, and oh-so-much cooler. Can’t play Tetris on it though, as far as I can figure.

Nothing like a dash of uber-cool beatnik elitism for keeping one’s grocery list!

One Ringy Dingy…

I’m as much a techo-geek fanatic as the next guy, but it seems I keep falling back on old tech. I bought Jess a 50s era rotary telephone for her birthday. Why? Because holding the handset to your ear for hours is much more comfortable than with any fancy new 1Ultra-GHZ cordless phone. Also, you never accidently hang it up with your cheek, I can always find it, the battery never goes dead, and you can drop it from a 6-story building with no ill effects (assuming it doesn’t land on someone). And it’s orange.

1st Major iMac Gripe

Window resizing sucks all the way ‘round. First, I have to hit one little tiny corner way down there in order to resize a window. Windows does this better. Second, it takes forever for windows to redraw after resizing. Seek, click, drag,… wait for it…, window resizes. Some apps are worse than others, but sheesh.

The iMac G5 may not be the fastest Mac available, but are you telling me I need 2 processors in order to move a simple little window around the screen?

Other than that, and not being able to delete files using just the ‘delete’ key, it’s all good.

Happy Birthday Jess

My girl turned 16 yesterday. I’ve wondered what that would be like - and now I know. Teenagers are tough. If lately I’ve mentioned that a few too many times, I’ve mislead you. She’s friendly, fun, fantastic, and quite simply my favorite person in the entire world, forever.

So what’s it like? It’s wonderful. Happy birthday baby girl.

G5 Optimized Firefox Builds

I’ve heard good things about the Firefox builds optimized for the G5, so I’m trying it.

Pages load noticeably faster, and scrolling long pages is much faster. Stable so far, too.

He’s also built in modified versions of form widgets, which look nicer than the defaults.

All This Great Software!

When did they start making so much excellent software for the Mac? When I left there was like, Quark and Photoshop. Nearly every time I start looking for some utility or other app, I seem to find something that is not only applicable, but pretty damn polished as well. Seem that all the freeware/shareware folks are in some sort of contest to see who’s software looks and feels the best. It’s a contest that ends up with everybody a winner.

And this list of software from Mac OS X Power Tools looks like a fine place to start.

Tabbrowser Extensions

Firefox tabbed browsing is great, but only until you’ve installed the Tabbrowser Extension. You’ll then have…

  • A close box on every tab, as it should be (must be enabled)

  • The ever-popular “Undo Close Tab” item.

  • Drag and drop tabs to re-order them.

  • When closing a tab, the previously selected tab is then selected (must be enabled)

And a ton more. I’m not sure why this extension isn’t listed on the main Firefox site, but it works lovely and once you’ve installed it you’ll never want to live without it.

Firefox 1.0

I started using Firefox when it was called “Phoenix” and was still at something like version 0.0.0.5. (and already better than IE.) You all know they just released version 1.0, so just go ahead and upgrade.

Everyone has been feeding the rumor mill about Google building a browser. I don’t know anything about that, but did y’all notice that the new Firefox start page is http://www.google.com/firefox. Interesting. (I tried google.com/ie and I’m not sure I get the joke, if there is one)
