99 Rooms

I saw all 99 Rooms. It’s just the right mix of surreal, beautiful, and WTF?!

Geek Lunch

Had an enjoyable lunch today with Matthew. It’s suprising how much fun it is to have some good food and just go nuts on things like XSLT, practical uses of surrogate keys (and of course a little Kung Fu and theater.)

Turns out I actually like being a geek.

3-on-3 Champions

Jessica’s team took first place in a local 3-on-3 tournament.

I’ve Got What It Takes…

…camera equipment-wise. Seems there’s practically a consensus that one of the great combinations for any photography is a Leica M, Summicron 35mm ASPH and Tri-X.

I wish that weren’t the case, so I’d have an excuse.

D. Kieth: Sick of Web Standards

D. Kieth Robinson is Sick of web standards. I’ll quote most of it here…

There are basically four reactions to posts on Web standards and frankly more advocacy doesn’t seem to be helping most of them.

1 You Already Get It

Well, this one is pretty obvious. You read a post on Web standards, you agree with it and can see all the advantages. I don’t really need to talk to you any more.

2 You’ll Never Get It

No matter what I say, no matter how much real world or theoretical evidence I supply, you’ll never see the value of Web standards. Good luck to you. I don’t need to talk to you any more.

3 You Expect Too Much

These people bother me the most. You’re the person for whom nothing less that 100% valid code on every page I build is enough. In your mind I should just keep my mouth shut if I can’t â€Âoewalk the walk.â€Â? Fine, I’ll do that. I don’t want to talk to you any more. See you in the real world.

4 You’re Interested and You Want To Know More

This is where I’ve been trying to target most of my work. You’re the person who might be new to Web standards, but you’ve just not been able to get your head around it. You work in the real world and want to see real world benefits. You want people to â€Âoeshowâ€Â? rather than â€Âoetellâ€Â?.

I think he’s right.

Web Standards Are Boring

Simon Willison writes

Let’s face it: web standards are boring! Focusing discussions on them is like taking cooking lessons from a chef who only ever talks about food safety; sure they’re important, but there’s so much more involved in creating a decent meal.

I think he’s nailed it. Talking about standards is not the way to the client’s heart. I’ll let you know when I figure out what is, but in the meantime…

Shoot and Run

My guess is that Tracy should’ve just taken the photo and ran. But on the other hand, I bet it’ll make for some interesting lunch table chat in 2-6 weeks.

Hey Tracy, post the picture already!
